On May 11, 1972, through the divine guidance and inspiration of our most gracious Lord, out of the soul of Reverend Luther J. Westbrook, Sr. and seven other Christians, the fellowship of the Winston Avenue Baptist Church emerged.
Reverend Luther J. Westbrook, Sr., and the congregation negotiated with the titleholders of Temple of Wisdom Church at 39th Street and Greenmount Avenue. At that time, the Winston Avenue Baptist Church secured a contract to hold worship services in that building. On March 2, 1975, Reverend Luther J. Westbrook, Sr. led his congregation to 500 E. 39th Street and Greenmount Avenue.
Unexpectedly, on September 7, 1982, the flock was shocked and saddened by the homegoing of our faithful organizing Pastor and Shepherd.
After the organizing Pastor's death, Reverend Luther J. Westbrook, Sr., the congregation asked several ministers to render service when the church was Shepherd-less. After realizing that Reverend Luther J. Westbrook, Jr., had once been assistant minister before leaving to attend college, the officers and members requested him to return as Pastor.
In December 1982, Reverend Luther J. Westbrook, Jr. resigned from the pastorship of the Star of Bethel Baptist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He and his wife, Mrs. Ella Westbrook, relocated to Baltimore, Maryland on January 1, 1983. Reverend Westbrook assumed pastoral duties of the Winston Avenue Baptist Church on the first Sunday in January of 1983.
Through the efforts and dedication of Pastor Luther J. Westbrook, Jr. and being guided by the Holy Spirit, the church continues to evolve in various ministries such as evangelism, stewardship, and outreach to the community to meet the needs of the whole person.
May God keep us humble, ever determined and dedicated to further service in a Christian and progressive manner.
Pray for this Branch of Zion as we continue to live our church motto, "Winston Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, The Friendly Church to Each and Everyone."
